Evenings with Artifcts Fall 2024 Series, Workshop Style

Fall is here and with it comes everything pumpkin spice, cooler nights, and the return of Evenings with Artifcts! This fall our 5-part series is centered on interactive workshops that allow YOU, our Arti Community members, to follow along with us as we delve into the details of how to Artifct photos, ephemera, and everything baby, just to name a few.

No guilt tripping or extreme minimalism hacks here. We'll talk frameworks to tackle the sentimental clutter and photos, and invite you to take a fresh look at your legacy and life stories through the lens of Artifcts. We'll highlight key features and time-saving tips and provide you plenty of time to follow-along at home as you capture, preserve, and share YOUR story, YOUR memories, one object at a time. And to that end, each workshop will also lean on one of our many free checklists to help inspire our conversation.

Mark your calendars for Wednesday evenings at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET from October 16th through November 13th. Look for event and RSVP details each week in our e-newsletter and on our social media channels (Instagram and Facebook). And please share with friends, family, and others you meet. The more the merrier!

The Power of Three

Today we’re talking about the number three.

As a kid, my life was filled with the power of three.

I was the youngest of three children, and we’re all no doubt aware of the many conflicting but intriguing theories and real-life examples about the relevance of birth order.

I also went to Catholic school where THE three was the father, son, and holy ghost followed, as I understood it, in a distant second by faith, hope, and love.

The universe, of course, gives us threes aplenty: earth, moon, and stars, for one. Larry, Moe, and Curly for another.

And from there we can delve into our natural preference for patterns—since three is the minimum number to create a pattern—and for the rule of three for balance and harmony in design. Don’t put two “things” on a shelf, use a trio. Follow the rule of thirds in photography. And always give three examples.

The business world is strong on the principle of three, too. Easy example: Don’t offer small and large; offer small, medium, and large, and let buyer behavior guide your consumer to the medium size more times than not.

Why all this talk of threes?

Next week Artifcts will celebrate its third birthday, and we know that the blood, sweat, and tears (wink, wink) of building any tech startup is rewarding, but the reality is that it’s through growth in new members, new markets, and new diehard Artifcters that we’ll realize our dream of transforming for us all our relationships with ‘stuff’ and with each other.

We invite you all to celebrate with us by creating your first or Nth Artifct. It takes only a couple minutes. While you're at it, make three. Third time may be the charm and help you to appreciate the power and potential of Artifcts in your life.

Ready? Have three minutes for three Artifcts?

Pause now.

Grab your phone or tablet.

(And install the Artifcts app if you haven't already. It looks like this in the App Store (Apple) and Google Play (Android).)
      1. Now, are you signed in? Great. Open your phone’s photo & video gallery.
      2. Start scrolling.
      3. Stop on the first photo or video that makes you smile.
      4. Click "Share."
      5. Choose the Artifcts app. (You might have to click “...” or "More" to choose the Artifcts app the first few times.)
      6. Add the details about this pic or video, and click save.
      7. Enjoy a relaxing breath. You've taken one step toward the peace of mind of knowing you’ve captured something fabulous. Not so sure? How about you've taken a step to help us celebrate our 3rd birthday and make it the best one yet?

Share your new Artifcts with a friend. Let them also relive and enjoy that moment, that memory, with you. It’s oh so easy.

Evenings with Artifcts Spring 2024 series is live!

Spring has arrived and with it new energy for the return of Evenings with Artifcts and the generous guests who offer their time and expertise to all of us here in the Arti Community. This spring our 5-part series is anchored on the concept of decluttering. Our guests know a lot about stuff: decluttering it, collecting it, and making healthy choices about it all for ourselves and in support of others.

No 'stuff' shaming or extreme minimalism hacks here. We'll talk frameworks to tackle the sentimental clutter and photos, supporting those going through life transitions and parsing through their belongings, and rethinking what exactly a "collection" is and why it holds value to us.

Mark your calendars for Wednesday evenings at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET from April 17 through May 15. Look for event and RSVP details each week in our e-newsletter and on our social media channels (Instagram and Facebook). And please share with friends, family, and others you meet. The more the merrier!

See You at RootsTech 2024!

Little do those outside the world of family history and genealogy research know, Salt Lake City and the annual RootsTech conference held there each winter are the place to be to hone your research skills, learn about some of the new products and services to help you along, and meet with kindred spirits from all walks of life and locations around the globe.

Last year was the first year we attended RootsTech. As the event was a fraction of the pre-COVID pandemic size, we were sure our two-women founding team would be just fine managing on their own. Ha! Suffice to say we never sat down. (This year, smart shoes will be in tow - check out Ellen's and Heather's shoes.) We surprised and delighted the crowd. A female founded, patented, tech platform to help them convey the memories behind their family heirlooms, photos, and genealogy research was just the ticket!

This year, we’re ready to go. We’ll have a slate of special guests making appearances at our booth (#1517-1519), ample devices for people to pause and create their first Artifcts on, and a few exciting surprises to unveil, too!

Artifcts will be at RootsTech at booths 1517 and 1519

If you are the “family keeper,” love telling a good story, a genealogist (hobbyist or pro), or a potential business partner, stop by at booth #1517-1519 and say hello in Salt Lake City! You can also get ahead and book time for a 1:1 demo before you head to the conference or schedule time to meet on with our team on the sidelines in person by contacting us at Hello@Artifcts.com

Happy Artifcting!

Behind the Scenes at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas

The entire week at CES we were playing around with versions of "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas," because that is clearly not our plan. When you read our two-year-old startup was heading to the world's largest consumer tech show you may have felt a bit curious. We were delightfully surprised to be invited by the AgeTech Collaborative at AARP to be a part of its monster 13,000 sq. ft. booth. But we too wondered, what with flying cars, futuristic glasses, phones, hologram machines ... everything, would anyone stop to learn about a consumer tech app tackling all things 'stuff?'

If you've never been to CES, just know it's more than 100,000 people descending on Vegas to attend a show spanning multiple buildings, and that is so complex you can schedule tours to support your agenda. We were eager to at least test out the fun around us: a keurig-like machine that makes ice cream, a giant balance board with lights that shakes to relieve muscle aches, and of course a hologram machine. Just for fun, at CES, it even aged people backward and forward in time.

Artifcts advisory board member Matt Paxton, host of Legacy List with Matt Paxton, stepped in front of the camera to demonstrate the power of the Proto Hologram. He had to get in line, however, as this device was wildly popular all week.

For Artifcts, CES exceeded expectations across multiple areas with conversations and strategic partnership discussions in: consumer tech, financial planning, insurance, end of life preparedness and care, engaging intergenerationally, and, yes, even genealogy. Now, to sign on those dotted lines. Stay tuned for more excitement and still more value behind every Artifct you create.

Before we go, a few snapshots from the week: Shark Tank, podcasts, heart-strong conversations, and more. And a bit of advice: a lot of this was made possible because of serious advanced planning, outreach, and even self-preservation moves, including bringing a travel humidifier, lots of water to the booth, chapstick, and comfy shoes!

Prepping for CES included outreach to people in #AgeTech and #StartupInvestment.

Heather joined Mary Furlong for a podcast and recorded a pitch for Shark Tank.

Our cofounders never ventured far from the AARP booth during show hours. The AARP stage was far enough to catch thought provoking presentations and some great guest appearances, including Howie Mandel. The evenings were for more relaxed opportunities to catch up with other executives and partners - pictured here is Cody Barbo, CEO of Trust&Will, and Nat Robinson, CEO of Trustworthy, at the AARP After Dark Pitch Event.

Here's to a bright 2024! Happy Artifcting.

The Fall Series of Evenings with Artifcts was a Smash Hit

The fall series of Evenings with Artifcts brought in people who were brand new to Artifcts and earned outstanding reviews from new and existing Arti Community members. In fact, 97% of survey respondents rated the series "very" or "extremely" valuable and informative. We’re feeling the love.

What does this mean for you? Well, to start with, we’re definitely bringing back Evenings with Artifcts this spring! And, we can start planning it with confidence and hopefully with your help, too. We’re on a mission to spur and support conversations about the ‘stuff’ in our lives and we’d love your input!

What Should We Talk About Next?

Here are but a few of the ideas that we received, verbatim, from survey respondents.

      • Artificial Intelligence
      • Export & integration tips with digital vaults (Just you wait. You’ll like what’s coming.)
      • Bring Gena [Philbert-Ortega] back
      • Repeat all your topics with new presenters
      • Real Arti Community members and how they are using Artifcts (Sounds great! Write us at Editor@Artifcts.com to volunteer.)
      • What to do with old photos (Start here, and we'll continue to expand!)
      • The psychology of letting go of our own material possessions and helping others to do the same (We have an ARTIcles story on this topic scheduled for January! You may also want to read our ARTIcles related to health and aging.)
      • What other family genealogy folks find working for them (Will do! We've had so many great conversations with genealogists and genealogy-related ARTIcles with our learnings so far.)

Sharing this wish list with you is both about transparency and about sharing the fun with all of you in the Arti Community!

What do you think of these ideas? What would YOU like to learn and experience in the spring series? Write to us at Editor@Artifcts.com and we’ll be sure to review all your suggestions!

Until then, if you're looking for the Evenings with Artifcts playbacks or related resources from any of our series, they’re all here for you.

XOXO Artifcts
