‘Stuff’ Specialist and TV Personality Matt Paxton Joins Artifcts Advisory Board

July 22, 2022

Artifcts welcomes Matt Paxton to its strategic advisory board. Established in March, the board provides diverse expertise and decades of experience across technology, estate planning, community building, marketing, strategic growth, and now ‘stuff.’ Matt Paxton started his career with his own downsizing and moving business before gaining national celebrity through appearances on the TV show Hoarders and more recently paving a new path with the PBS series Legacy List with Matt Paxton.

“Matt approaches stuff by looking at the humanity, the history, behind the objects and people’s attachments to them. He doesn’t demand a painful dive into a one-size fits all minimalism. We’re kindred spirits here at Artifcts,” said Artifcts co-founder Heather Nickerson. “Matt’s empathy and energy are great match for the passion behind Artifcts. Everyone needs a history and Matt respects that. He sees first-hand daily the need for Artifcts,” chimed in Artifcts co-founder Ellen Goodwin.

Look for the co-founders of Artifcts and Matt to be out and about through special virtual engagements and live appearances this fall. The trio will continue to Artifct-by-example and release tips to help you join in to redefine artifacts one recipe, heirloom, and travel trinket at a time. Heather reminds everyone, “Remember, when in doubt, just pause, look around, and snap a picture of the first object you see with a story or memory to capture. Artifcting is for all of us.”

Artifcts CEO Heather Nickerson Featured on The Essence of Caregiving Podcast to Explore Legacy Planning Through a Human Lens

July 2026

Artifcts is proud to share that Founder and CEO Heather Nickerson recently joined Lisa Joworski, host of The Essence of Caregiving podcast, for a thoughtful conversation titled The Story Behind the Object: Legacy Planning Through a Human Lens. The episode explores how everyday objects in our lives can become powerful tools for preserving identity, strengthening family connections, and making caregiving and legacy planning more compassionate and intentional.

During the conversation, Heather shares the deeply personal experience that inspired Artifcts after the sudden loss of her mother. Faced with a home full of treasured belongings but too few stories behind them, she recognized a challenge that countless families encounter—inheriting "stuff" without understanding its meaning.

Together, Heather and Lisa explore the intersection of caregiving, storytelling, and legacy planning, emphasizing that preserving personal history is not simply about preparing for the future—it's about enriching relationships in the present. They discuss how documenting the stories behind cherished belongings can ease the emotional burden families often face during downsizing, estate settlement, and times of loss while helping caregivers better understand the people they support.

Highlights from the Conversation

Among the many topics covered in the episode are:

  • Why every meaningful object has a story. The emotional value of an heirloom often far exceeds its financial worth, making context one of the greatest gifts we can leave future generations.
  • A practical approach to legacy planning. Heather introduces the idea of beginning with just a handful of meaningful possessions—a personal "Legacy List"—to make documenting memories feel achievable rather than overwhelming.
  • Reducing stress and conflict for families. Recording not only an item's history but also your wishes for its future can eliminate uncertainty and prevent disagreements after a loved one passes.
  • Supporting caregiving through storytelling. Photos, audio, video, and personal narratives can become valuable tools for reminiscence, dementia care, and person-centered caregiving.
  • Decluttering without losing what matters. Families can confidently part with physical belongings while preserving the stories and memories attached to them for generations to come.

The discussion also explores how digital storytelling is changing the way families think about legacy. Rather than focusing solely on inventories or financial assets, Heather encourages listeners to preserve the experiences, relationships, and values that objects represent—creating a richer, more complete picture of a life well lived.

Continuing the Artifcts Mission

Heather's appearance on The Essence of Caregiving reflects the growing recognition that legacy planning extends beyond legal documents and estate administration. It is equally about preserving family stories, honoring personal identity, and making it easier for loved ones to understand what mattered most.

At Artifcts, that mission remains at the heart of everything we build: helping people capture the stories behind the things they treasure, so future generations inherit memories, not mysteries.

Artifcts CEO Heather Nickerson Featured on LegacyTree Genealogists Podcast About Preserving the Stories Behind the Things We Keep

Heather Nickerson, Founder and CEO of Artifcts, recently joined a podcast conversation with LegacyTree Genealogists to explore how the objects in our lives carry meaning far beyond their physical form. In the episode, Heather shares insights into why preserving the stories behind belongings can help families strengthen connections, prepare for life transitions, and ensure meaningful legacies are passed down across generations.

During the conversation, Heather explains how many families inherit possessions without understanding the history or emotional significance behind them. Without those stories, treasured items can lose their meaning or become sources of confusion during estate planning and downsizing. Tools like Artifcts help bridge that gap by allowing people to document the memories, context, and intentions tied to their belongings.

Drawing from both personal experience and her work building Artifcts, Heather emphasizes the importance of capturing stories before they are lost. Her own inspiration for creating the platform came after the unexpected passing of her mother, when she realized she had inherited many items—but not the stories behind them. Key Insights from the conversation include:

  • Start with meaning, not inventory. The most valuable part of an item is often the story behind it.

  • Preserve context for future generations. Photos, videos, and written memories help families understand why objects matter.

  • Make legacy planning more approachable. Even small steps toward documenting belongings can reduce stress for loved ones later.

Through conversations like this podcast appearance, Heather continues to highlight the broader mission of Artifcts: helping people capture the memories, value, and meaning behind the things that shape our lives.

As families increasingly seek ways to organize belongings, declutter thoughtfully, and prepare for the future, the ability to document the story behind “stuff” has become an essential part of preserving personal history and family legacy.
