I wish I could remember where I read this criticism of fundraising walk events, but the author’s point stayed with me: Why not do something more than walk, like build a house.

From this #survivor’s perspective, if you have ever actually participated in a walk, or been the beneficiary of the walk’s efforts, the answer would be obvious. (But ALSO for the record, I wouldn't be opposed to a fundraiser concert now and then either 😉.)

The Susan G. Komen MORE THAN PINK Walk® to me is about community. As a cancer survivor, a cancer thriver, or a family member or friend, you may not even yet realize how much this community helps until you find yourself stepping into it. While as a society we tend to shy away from dark humor as far as life threatening disease are concerned, having this moment together to smile, connect, and feel like what you’re going through can help inspire others to donate and advocate gives you a sense of control when life is so obviously out of our control.

On walk day, you’ll also discover that the distance walked is intentionally short. Otherwise, so many who want to join in would be shut out, whether because of #breastcancer treatment, disability, or injury. Not everyone who wants to be there is ready for a marathon nor is training and endurance the point of the day.

Walk day is also an opportunity to learn more about...

... exactly how this fundraising helps people, like the financial grants given to people in need to cover everything from a ride to the doctor to childcare to healthy food on the table.

... others like you and others so unlike you, because while a #breastcancer diagnosis to some people may sound like better news than other types of cancer, the fact remains that late detection and aggressive forms of breast cancer coupled with any number of comorbidities is, guess, what CANCER. It sucks. It’s miserable, no good, rotten. And we need to open our eyes to the realities and to how we can help.

... the products and services that exist in this world to support patients, thrivers and survivors, and caregivers, too.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Artifcts has created two walk teams to join the MORE THAN PINK Walks® where the cofounders live, one in Washington D.C., the other in Austin, Texas. Both founders will be at both walks.

And we have sent an ambitious fundraising goal, because we believe we can do it. It’s not just the mega corporations with huge employee numbers that can do it. We can to, if you all join us.

      1. SHOW UP! Walk with us. Learn more, celebrate, support.
      2. FUNDRAISE WITH US! As a walker, you can help us to raise funds.
      3. DONATE! You can donate to our teams. And be sure to check if your employer will match your contribution and keep your receipt for a tax deduction.

IS SPONSORING IN THE REALM OF POSSIBLE?

The MORE THAN PINK Walk® needs sponsors.

And our co-founder Ellen can help you learn about the variety of out-of-the-box and custom sponsorship opportunities available for companies of all sizes. This spring she joined the Austin walk’s Executive Leadership Team and is determined to make this the best Austin MORE THAN PINK Walk® ever.

Ellen Goodwin has joined the Susan G. Komen MORE THAN PINK Walk ELT

As a small startup ourselves, we know that making a dent as a sponsor can feel futile and beyond reach. With Komen, it is not. Reach out to Ellen@Artifcts.com if you want to learn about sponsorship opportunities.
