I bought this ring box while in Afghanistan. It is so simple, yet so beautiful. The silver base was etched by hand, and the turquoise is native to Afghanistan. I am not sure how much I paid for it at the bazaar, but it could not have been more than a dollar or two. I would like Little H to one day have this box.

I bought this box at one of the Friday bazaars in Kabul. I love the colors and the delicate detailing of the painted wood. I have used it over the years to hold jewelry, trinkets, love notes, etc. It is my little keepsakes box.

I purchased this painting at a bazaar in Afghanistan. Latifa’s father was selling it on her behalf as she was not allowed to sell at the market because she was female. It captures the winter landscape, the mountains, the prayer flags, and the blue sky perfectly. People are always shocked when I tell them Afghanistan is one of the most beautiful countries I have been to.

I bought this hand carved wooden box in a market in Kabul. I wish I knew the story behind the box--who carved it, who owned it, what was it used for, etc. I love the detail in the carving, how there are nicks, dents, and pieces that don't line up just right. It has character, and it reminds me that everything has a story.

I bought these cloth ornaments from the Parsa women craft collective in Afghanistan in 2009. They were one of the few (actually only) female craft collectives allowed to sell at the market. They were designed to be hung from the rear view mirror of a car, but I decided they would be better suited to my Christmas tree. They have had a place of honor on my tree every year since. (And even managed to survive our new COVID puppy and his first Christmas.)

I bought these cups in Afghanistan at the ISAF bazaar. I wish I knew more about them and the artisan who made them. I love the detailing on each cup, and I love how you can see the marks and indentations from their making. I occasionally use them as vases, and am thinking about repurposing one to be a reusable straw holder. Gotta find a way to keep them in use so they don’t end up buried in a cabinet somewhere.

I bought this necklace while overseas in Afghanistan. Lapis lazuli (or lajaward in Dari) is a semi-precious stone that has been mined in the Badakhshan Province in Afghanistan for over 6,000 years. The golden specks visible in the second photo are specks of pyrite. It was the same trip that I also bought my Afghan Lacquer Box .

I bought this bowl while deployed to Afghanistan. Turquoise Mountain was then in their infancy--they had a bazaar set up at the US Embassy highlighting the work they were doing to preserve the craft/culture around ceramics in Afghanistan. The color really struck me, as did the story behind the bowl. Each one is handmade using traditional methods, techniques, and materials. Turquoise Mountain has evolved in size and scope over the years. They are currently working in Afghanistan to restore built heritage in Murad Khani and Bamiyan, support local communities, revive the the country's historic craft traditions, and generate incomes for artisans. They remain deeply committed to their work in Afghanistan despite recent events.

I received the Distinguished Service Award for my service in Afghanistan. Serving as a briefer in Afghanistan was a formative moment in my still young career. I will always cherish the memories and adventures from my time in country. As for the rest of the story? You'll have to ask me in person one day.

The places you'll go; or rather, the places I've been. These boots have traveled the world with me. They have been to Afghanistan, Belize, Cuba, Europe, and across the US. They have hiked the Bagram mountains, the Dolomites, the Rockies, Moab, and long stretches of the Appalachian Trail. I was wearing them at 11,000 feet when M proposed to me on a boulder overlooking Bridal Veil Falls in Telluride. They spent two days in a vice while M super glued the soles back on, all so I could wear them while hiking on our honeymoon. They've been with me through literal ups and downs; figurative ones too. Although they are falling apart at the seams, I cannot give them up. They are a reminder to me of all that is possible when you put your mind to it. No mountain is too tall, or trail too steep if you take it one step at a time.
